Causes Of Colic In Infants

What exactly causes colic is still quite a mystery and doctors and parents are struggling to figure out how to cure it. But the problem is that some believe that colic is nothing serious and don’t really consider it as a disorder. But tell that to parents who have to deal with cranky babies who cry inconsolably.

Many believe that colic in babies occur due to organic illnesses like milk allergies, lactose intolerance or some kind of gastric problems. While others believe that colicky babies are just hypersensitive and hyperactive babies that need some stimulation constantly. But no one has been able to pin the real cause as of now.

Colic happens not just because of one condition but rather several symptoms combined together lead to colic in babies. It could either some physiological problems or outward stimulus or sometimes an abusive upbringing. The shaken baby syndrome is one such cause that leads to colic.

Some believe that caesarean babies are more prone to colic compared to naturally born babies. But this theory hasn’t been proved scientifically. Indigestion and gastric problems can induce colic in babies. Sometimes babies get gassy and this leads to extreme discomfort and excessive crying. And they have a tendency to swallow a lot of air while crying which results in further bloating and gas in their stomach.

Ensure that the baby’s diet is balanced and never overfeed your baby. Avoid feeding the baby unhealthy food and keep tabs on their feeding pattern to notice anything off-putting. Some babies get irritated by formula milk while other babies who are lactose intolerant which could lead to colic.

Another thing that leads to colic in babies is environmental stimulus. Some babies get extremely irritated and affected by noises and different sounds. Monitor how your baby reacts to different sounds and noises and figure out if any of these sounds and noises is bothering them.

Many believe that emotional fluctuations in the mother can induce colic in the baby. If the mother is extremely stressed out and irritable then this could have an adverse affect on the baby. Also if the mother had a tendency to smoke before or during pregnancy, this could have affected the child bringing out the colic symptoms. It is a known fact that mother’s emotions whatever they might be, can affect a baby.

One of the saddest reasons why babies can be affected by colic is improper care. There are instances wherein some parents do not take proper care of the babies and sometime seven abuse them. Such instances of faulty nurturing can stimulate colic in babies. Parents who inflict harm to their babies can cause severe damage and instances of colic.
